Welcome to Icon Heaven
the Frobozz icon manager
Version 1.03
ABOUT ICON HEAVEN
Icon Heaven is a Workplace Shell enhancement that simplifies
the task of keeping icon libraries on your disk and assigning icons to
objects.
INSTALLATION
Simply unzip this file (FIH.ZIP) into an empty directory and double click
on the install.cmd object, or, in an OS/2 command session, type
install+<ENTER>.
The installation procedure will ask you for a directory where
Icon Heaven should be installed. After selecting a directory,
the installation procedure will copy all the necessary files to
that directory and create a number of Workplace Shell objects.
After the installation terminates, Icon Heaven will be available
in a folder on the desktop. You can move this folder from
the desktop to any other folder if you wish.
The installation procedure can clean up after itself when terminating.
So the directory used to run the installation from will be empty. You
only have to save the Zip file if you want to do a re-install later.
DE-INSTALLATION
If, perchance, you really don't like Icon Heaven, you can easily remove it
from your system. The installation procedure will install a de-install
object in the Icon Heaven folder. Simply double-click on it and answer
the obligatory queries on whether you are absolutely sure you know what
you are doing and Icon Heaven will be removed. During de-install, you can
ignore the dialog box that asks you to confirm closing the de-install
session, it will close by itself anyway.
De-install should be performed after a reboot, before any Icon Folder
is opened. An open Icon Folder cannot be correctly removed by de-install.
RE-INSTALLATION
A re-installation procedure called reinst.cmd is also provided. If you
happen to delete the Icon Heaven folder from your system, this program
will recreate it for you, including all the icon folders. Just open an
OS/2 Command Prompt window and run REINST from the directory where
Icon Heaven is installed.
THE APPLICATION
Icon Heaven uses a special type of folder, called an Icon Folder,
to store icons. These icons are not physically stored on disk where
they would take up far too much diskspace for the occasional time
you need them. Instead Icon Heaven stores icons in special
compressed libraries and only expands those when they are
accessed. This reduces the storage cost of an icon to a mere
7% of the space needed when using normal icons. (On a FAT disk)
LIBRARIES INCLUDED
This package includes a set of five icon libraries. They are:
- Wordprocessing icons
- Datacomm icons
- Games icons
- Compiler icons
- Utility icons
A separate set of libraries is available for download from the OS2BVEN forum
on CompuServe. This is a big set containing some 2300 converted
Windows icons. There is no need to download these if you already
have those as they've been roaming the nets for quite some time now.
Please see intructions below for creating your own libraries.
ASSIGNING ICONS
Icon Heaven also simplifies assigning icons to objects. Instead of having
to open the settings for an object and dragging the appropriate icon to
the General page, icons are assigned by dragging the object to the icon.
A simple one step operation.
MANAGING ICON LIBRARIES
Icon Heaven does not restrict you to using the icon libraries provided
with the software. You can easily expand the libraries provided or
create your own. This is done using normal Workplace actions, by
dragging a new Icon Folder from the Templates folder or by selecting
'Create another' from the popup menu of an existing Icon Folder. Then
you can 'connect' the folder to a library by opening the settings and
specifying the name of a new iconlibrary (for instance:
'C:\IHeaven\MyIcons.FIM').
Now that you've created the library, you can open it and add icons to it.
Adding icons to a library is simply a process of dragging Workplace objects
to the folder (they don't have to be icon files). This will populate the
folder and the library.
THE ICONLIB TOOL
Also included is a small library manager called iconlib.exe. It allows you
to list the contents of an icon library, pretty up the names of the icons,
add new icons (icon files only) and set the folder name. This tool is useful
when you have big directories full of icons and you want to convert them
into Icon Heaven libraries, just type:
iconlib c:\IHeaven\cool.FIM c:\icons\cool\*.ico
and all the icons in the cool directory will be added to a Icon Heaven
library named cool.FIM.
The iconlib tool also has a few other features. For an online help of
the switches supported, just run iconlib without any parameters.
REGISTERING
Icon Heaven is shareware. You are granted a 30 day trial period to see if you like
the software. Feel free to pass it on to friends, neighbours and colleages...
If you like Icon Heaven, please register it, support the shareware concept.
Icon Heaven costs only $10. This is for a single OS/2 system lifetime licence
including any and all future updates to the product.
You can register Icon Heaven by sending your name and creditcard number plus
expiration date to:

The actual amount debited from your credit card will be slightly higher
than $10, because of fluctuations in international currency rates. Payment
will be done in dutch guilders, FL 20,- (about $11.50 at the time I write
this, the dollar isn't in very good shape right now)
Users in the Netherlands can also register by transferring HFL 23,50 to
bank account 45.17.71.214, tnv Van Keep Software BV.
This price includes Dutch VAT.
On CompuServe you can also register through the Shareware Registration
Database. To access the database, use GO SWREG and select 'Register
Shareware'. The registration ID for Icon Heaven is: 2983. The price
for registering Icon Heaven through CompuServe is $13.50, due to the
high fee CIS claims for handling registrations.
Registering will get rid of (some of) the troubles with your conscience as
well as the annoying popup of the about dialog the first time you
open an Icon Folder after a reboot.
No other limitations are present that force you to register.
SUPPORT
Support for Icon Heaven is given by the author on the electronic mail
addresses mentioned above. On CompuServe support is also available in
the OS2 shareware vendors forum: GO OS2SHARE, section 1

PLANNED ENHANCEMENTS
The next version of Icon Heaven will support renaming of icons (You can
rename them now, but the changes won't be saved).
I also want to add the possibility of editing icons by invoking the
icon editor on a double-click, like normal icons.
Any other suggestions for enhancing Icon Heaven are greatly appreciated.
Please send any mail to one of the adresses above.
KNOWN PROBLEMS
Alas, once again no software without known problems. It appears that a
bug in an older version of the ATI Mach32 video drivers surfaces when
Icon Heaven is used. This results in the Workplace Shell trapping. Upgrading
to the latest release should clear the problem.
Don't drag an icon to the general page of an object. For some reason the
general page does not know how to handle the object being dropped. This
results in drag & drop being unavailable in the whole Workplace Shell (at
least on my system with 2.11).
